With the (at last) recommendification of XSLT 2.0, XQuery, and XPath 2.0, it seems like a good time to get interested in programming language support for XML.     The Scala language has native support for XML, it also merges the functional and oo paradigms and integrates with Java and .NET. A good and quick overview can be found in the POPL06 (pdf) keynote!
